As fencing experts with years of experience, we’ve received a lot of common questions regarding fences. So, we thought we’d compile them all here for you to read:
Generally, there are no UK laws regarding the height of a garden fence. It can be as tall as you like, though you will require planning permission for a fence that is above two metres in height. Likewise, if your fence fronts a road, footpath or public highway, it can only be one metre high without planning permission.
If your garden has a slope to it, you may worry that building a fence is impossible. However, it is possible to build a fence on a slope without it looking crooked or out of place. It’s simply a case of adjusting the size of the fence as it declines down the slope. Effectively, the fence itself will have a gradual slope that mimics your garden, creating a more natural look.
Fence posts can break due to bad weather or ageing timber, but you can fix them at home with some simple garden tools. Dig around the base of your broken post and remove the turf and soil. Keep this in a wheelbarrow - and you need to dig down so you reveal the concrete below your post. Now, you can remove the old post and chip away at the concrete with a pickaxe. From here, put your new pole in place and use a rapid setting concrete product to pour it into the hole. A spirit leveller will help you ensure your post is level, and you can use bits of timber angled into the ground to keep the fence up. Once the concrete has hardened, you can cover it with soil and turf.
There are many reasons you might wish to repaint a fence, but the most common is that the old paint is starting to flake away and look unsightly. To remove it, you need to begin by washing away any dirt and grime from the fence. Pressure washers are really effective here, and then you must let your fence dry.
Next, it’s a simple case of using a paint scraper to scrape away some of the paint from your fence. If this isn’t effective, you may need to apply a paint stripper as well. Let it do its magic, then scrub away the paint using a brush. Now, your fence is bare and ready for a new lick of paint.
