If you want to stop your fence posts from rotting in the concrete, then the solution for this is very simple. You just need to put a thick layer of gravel at the bottom of the post hole. Ideally, the gravel should be loose and not tightly compacted. This will allow groundwater to trickle down, through the rock and past the base of the post. Any gravel will do here, so be sure to pick some up from your local hardware store.
One of the main, common issues that people see when they get a fence installed is that they do not set the posts deep enough. Fence posts should be dug at least two feet into the ground, and you also need to set them in cement or concrete before you proceed with the rest of the installation. This is the best way for you to make sure that your fence isn’t going to lean as you proceed with the installation. If you are repairing a fence and have a concrete pad already, you’ll need to use metal brackets and concrete screws to attach the fence posts to the concrete.
How and whether you choose to attach your fence to your home comes down to personal preference alone. If you have a home with siding, you run the risk of insects burrowing their way in. If you put your post around a foot away from the home, you can then allow the fence panel to overlap the final post. If you have brick, then you’ll need to drill four holes right into the masonry of your property. You can then secure the fence by using lag bolts so that you can achieve the look you are going for.
Ideally, you should think about the natural flow of traffic when deciding where to place your gate. You need to choose the right materials and you also need to ensure that they are good quality. Finally, you need to make sure that the ground under the gate is level and that it is high enough off the ground to allow good movement. If you build the gate too high, then this will allow any pets you have to escape, and it will also allow critters into your garden much more easily.
